چکیده

Most virtual reality (VR) systems employ head-mounted displays (HMDs). Many such systems are also designed to provide stereo depth and use head tracking to enable the virtual world to change in response to the user's movements. The current state of HMDs and other VR technology falls short of accurately simulating many aspects of the visual world. Differences between the real world, for which the human visual system had a few million years to adapt, and the novel HMD may result in degradation ofimage quality and/or cause discomfort and visual changes. Concerns about possible harmful.effects are reminiscent of similar worries that accompany the introduction of almost any new wide-use technology. Such concerns were raised with the introduction of television, computers and visual display terminals (VDTs), microwave ovens, and, most recently, cellular phones. This chapter describes a few possible mismatches between the visual system's response to the real world and its response to the virtual world of the HMD. Some of these mismatches result in unwanted perceptual effects including stress to the visual system, discomfort, and, presumably, long-term changes to the visual system. These unwanted effects mayor may not impact the acceptance of the technology. Many of the mismatches that result in these negative consequences can be

Perceptual Issues in the Use of Head-Mounted Visual Displays

OBJECTIVE We provide a review and analysis of much of the published literature on visual perception issues that impact the design and use of head-mounted displays (HMDs). BACKGROUND Unlike the previous literature on HMDs, this review draws heavily from the basic vision literature in order to help provide insight for future design solutions for HMDs. METHOD Included in this review are articl...

A comparison of optical and video see-through head-mounted displays

One of the most promising and challenging future uses of head-mounted displays (HMDs) is in applications where virtual environments enhance rather than replace real environments. To obtain an enhanced view of the real environment, the user wears a see-through HMD to see 3D computergenerated objects superimposed on his/her real-world view. This see-through capability can be accomplished using ei...

Visualization and (Mis)Perceptions in Virtual Reality

Virtual Reality (VR) technologies are now being widely adopted for use in areas as diverse as surgical and military training, architectural design, driving and flight simulation, psychotherapy, and gaming/entertainment. A large range of visual displays (from desktop monitors and head-mounted displays (HMDs) to large projection systems) are all currently being employed where each display technol...

Patient monitoring with head-mounted displays.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW Head-mounted displays (HMDs) are head-worn display devices that project an information display over the wearer's field of view. This article reviews a recent program of research that investigates the advantages and disadvantages of monitoring with HMDs, and discusses the design considerations and implementation issues that must be addressed before HMDs can be clinically adopte...

Head-Mounted Display Image Configurations

A scheme for organizing head-mounted displays based primarily on image configuration and secondarily on the display/optics and head-mounted sensor(s) is offered as a way to clarify design and human interface issues. These attributes are linked to field-of-view, image content and device applications. An argument is made for discarding confusing and outdated concepts. This organization of a diver...
